Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation’s compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another.
You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and to impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.” One Hundred years from now it will not matter what kind of house you lived in… what kind of car you drove… what your bank balance was…
but what will matter is that you were important in the life of a child, through your little projects and visits, you are being the hands and feet of God.

Deep enough and strong enough
Believes in you hard enough and long enough
Before you knew it, someone else would think “If he can do it, I can do it”
Making it two.
Two whole people who believe in you.
And maybe even you can believe in you too.

A VOLUNTEER is a person who is a light to others, giving witness in a mixed-up age, doing well and willingly the tasks at hand-namely, being aware of another’s needs and doing something about it.

This is a person who remembers to do the thing to make other people happy, who takes the loneliness out of the alone by talking to them, who is concerned when others are unconcerned, who has the courage to be a prophet and to say the things that have to be said for the good of all. A VOLUNTEER is also a person whose charity is fidelity, who is faithful in an unfaithful world, grateful in an ungrateful world, giving when all about are grasping, listening when others need to tell about their fears and problems. In doing your best serving others for free, a lot of eyebrows will raise and sneers will curve many a-faces. But in the end those incredulous to what you put up with to help, no longer matter. It’s not between you and those snobs, but with whom you have given your hand to lift, and of course to God who Is watching and noting it in your book.

Volunteers are not mere workers.
A worker could be good at working, but not at planning or decision-making. Similarly, the planners and decision-makers could be good at their jobs, but not at executing them. They are specialists, whereas volunteers are all-rounder. They are good as workers, as executioners, as planners, as decision makers, as initiators, and as leaders.

Volunteers work without any personal motivation.
They work to benefit others, not themselves. This makes them workers par excellence, executioners and leaders par excellence. The Volunteer Dharma, therefore, is dharma par excellence.

To volunteer is to live in accordance with dharma in accordance with the values of righteousness, selflessness, and above all egolessness. To volunteer is to practice humbleness; to volunteer is to live in synchronicity with Mother Nature, loving, caring, and sharing as She does.

A Volunteer is essentially a Spiritual Practitioner, a Sadhaka, a Karma Yogi one who is striving for the ultimate union with the Supreme through selfless action. Blessed, indeed, are all of you, engaged in this holy work at Byana Mary Hill Boarding Primary School.Effective volunteer leaders are the “keys” by which we unlock volunteer hands and minds just like our Director has shown us how to do it what the benefits will be after the exercise.

Remember, Knowing that you are helping to create a peaceful world and a safer planet is only a fraction of the pride that a volunteer should feel every time they lend an helping hand.To volunteer; is to contribute your goodness and works to humanity unselfishly, without seeking any rewards.

Because I know I can contribute, I therefore believe I can volunteer my contribution at Byana Mary Hill and I volunteer because it just makes me feel good about myself! when i remember the children who have gone through my guidance and what they are going to be to the world in future. hmmmmmmmm

Volunteer story at byana #1

I visited Byana Mary Hill in the summer of 2010. I accompanied a student group from the University of Utah, where we were visiting rural Uganda and studying public health.

Byana Mary Hill will always have a special place in my heart. The children were so warm and very interested in spending time with us. The educators were friendly, and happy to answer our many questions. The location was beautiful, and more hospitable than I could have imagined! We were treated to a buffet lunch, musical program, and tour. It was so memorable! (Some of our members even went to church services!)

While I was there I was followed by many children, but specifically remember being shadowed by a particular child. This little angel took my heart! If I did not have kids of my own waiting home for me, I would have been tempted to stay. Visiting Byana Mary Hill, one can tell the children are well cared for and given a lot of love- this child was so warm and affectionate, it was amazing. We did not speak one another’s language- but we understood one another. I cannot describe what a life changing experience this was for me, and how much it helped me grow as a person.

If you are looking to expand your horizons…
If you are looking for yourself…
If you are seeking more out of life…
Go there.

The experience will not be easy, but it will stay with you forever. Go! See what the world offers. See that there are other ways of life that are beautiful, unique, and wonderful! See what it is like to serve your fellow human beings in a safe and loving environment!

When my children are older, I will bring them to Byana Mary Hill. I have no doubt that they would love it there! I would recommend going there to anyone who is looking to serve in rural Uganda, or anyone who is interested in visiting a truly beautiful and unique place! There are English speakers at the school, and they are very happy to welcome volunteers. Volunteering would be appropriate for nearly every age! It really was wonderful, I cannot say enough about it!

Volunteer Village Site

Volunteer Village Site

We are in the midst of creating a small bit of paradise for our beloved volunteers to live in while they stay with us. It will be a homestead including one large traditional lodge house, surrounded by three small traditional huts. It will also have its own kitchen, garden and fruit trees. We can’t wait to show you the end result. Not only will it make your stay more comfortable and give you the feel of really living in rural Uganda, but it will save you the extra cost of transportation and hotel rooms. We hope you will enjoy the unique experience we have to offer!
